Thomas McConaghy



It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas McConaghy announces his passing on January 26, 2012 following a long and valiant struggle with COPD and emphysema. Tom will be lovingly remembered by his wife, June (nee Allen) of 60 years and his two daughters, Joanie (Dave) and Janet. He is survived by three brothers, Donald (Louise) McConaghy of Quispamsis, NB, Gerry (Penny) McConaghy of Rothesay, NB, and Stan (Lois) McConaghy of Fredericton, NB; two sisters, Ruth McConaghy of Los Angeles, CA and Shirley (Ted) Pierrepoint of Milton, ON. Remembering him with love will be his many nieces, nephews, extended family and caring friends. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Reverend Stanley and Lulu (nee Woods) McConaghy; two brothers, Douglas and John McConaghy; sister, Muriel McConaghy (Scott); as well as his step-mother, Marie McConaghy. Tom will be remembered for his positive outlook, his enjoyment of jazz music, his culinary skills and his extraordinary love of life. He devoted his life to his family and to his career in the field of Education. He was a passionate educator who contributed to the profession as a teacher, administrator and educational journalist for over 60 years. He was widely read and was a scholar of history and politics, particularly during the war-time era of Winston Churchill. Tom began his teaching career in New Brunswick before joining the RCAF and serving in Britain for four years during World War ll. Years later he returned to England with his family to complete post graduate studies in Education at the University of London. This experience created fond memories for Tom of life and travel abroad with his family. Tom graduated from Carleton University in 1951 and continued his teaching career in Ontario until 1966 when he moved to Edmonton to join the Alberta Teachersí Association (ATA). Tom was Coordinator of Communications, founding editor of the ATA news and was the editor of the ATA magazine for 18 years. Under his guidance the ATA magazine received numerous awards. Even after retirement Tom continued as an educational columnist for Phi Delta Kappan Magazine and held executive positions with a number of professional educational organizations. The loving care given to Tom by the staff and his friends at Capital Care Grandview will never be forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held at Robertson-Wesley United Church, 10209-123 Street, on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to do so may make donations in Tomís memory to the Canadian Diabetic Association, 1400-522 University Ave, Toronto ON, M5G 2R5, The Lung Association or a charity of their choice.
