Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Foo Fen Lowe

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother and grandmother Foo Fen Lowe, on March 14, 2019 at the age of 89. After a hard-fought battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.

She was born in Toishan Province, China in 1929 and came to Canada as a young bride to seek a better life. After being widowed in 1968, she worked long hours and multiple jobs to support her three young boys.

Money was scarce. There was very little support and her kids were so young; 4, 6 and 10 years old and she needed to care for them. She planted a backyard garden to grow vegetables for her family and she would take the extra to sell at the local market. She worked endless hours under the sun tending to her vegetables and saving every penny for University tuition in the hopes that her boys might have a better life than her.

She was tireless in her pursuit. In the evening, she worked for various Edmonton restaurants and as a night shift garment worker with Great Western Garment. Every penny was saved and her boys were always reminded to study and work hard.

In spite of financial hardships, there was always food on the table, love in the house and her dream that tomorrow would be better. She was a fiercely independent strong-willed woman with a tremendous spirit and loved her boys.

As her boys grew up and as they all graduated from University, her life changed. Stress and hardship became joy and comfort as her kids married and the grandkids arrived. She would always still wake up early in her little home and spend her day working in her vegetable garden. She travelled with friends and family and she really enjoyed life. She loved her grandkids and would always give them money and tell them to work hard. She was an amazing role model on how a person can bring so much love and kindness into the world with hard work and determination.

She is lovingly remembered by her children and their families.

Foo Fen is survived by her three sons: Ken (Chanel) of Calgary, Art (June), and Richard (Edna) of Edmonton; eight grandchildren, Melissa, Kayle, Andrew, Megan, Samantha, Cassandra, Jonathan and Christopher; and her sister, Woon Sua (Yick Chau) Mah of Edmonton. Including numerous step grandchildren, cousins and relatives.

A Viewing will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 6:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. A Celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. both will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 114 Street NW. Interment at Beechmount Cemetery, 12420 104 St NW.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200-325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 9Z9 or to the Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 1Z2.
