Edward 'Dinty' McCoy

The McCoy family is saddened to announce the passing of Edward “Dinty” McCoy in the early hours of February 28, 2019 at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 69 years, their five children- Danny, Mickey (Belinda), Jerry (Connie), Dianne and David (Whitney) eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Dinty was born and raised in Edmonton, where he lived his entire life. The son of a blacksmith, Dinty founded McCoy Brothers Ltd. with his three older brothers. Later in life, he owned and operated his father’s original spring shop, Edmonton Auto Spring Works, located on the corner of 95th Street and 102nd Avenue for over 25 years. He was forced into retirement at the young age of 83 when the shop was destroyed by fire in March of 2010.

Dinty lived a simple life and appreciated the simple things life offered. His interests were diverse. Early in his life, he enjoyed skiing, travelling with friends, and organizing many sailing trips to the west coast and the Caribbean. He was the proud host of the “Mud Flap Open” which was a yearly sailing race held at Silver Beach on Pigeon Lake. Dinty and Betty also very much enjoyed hosting an annual St. Patty’s Day party for many years, a can’t miss event that was widely anticipated by friends and family. Legend has it that Betty was known on occasion to have made breakfast for many of the partygoers before they departed for home. Dinty’s other passions included hunting, fishing, and gardening. In addition to these pursuits, Dinty was a keen racket sports player throughout his life and could regularly be found playing either squash or tennis at the Royal Glenora Club.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of station 5F2 at the University of Alberta Hospital for their attentive and sensitive care in Dinty's final days.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9830 148 St., Edmonton, at 10:30 on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. There will be a private interment at a later date.
