Richard (Max) Baird

On November 25, 2018, Dr. Richard (Max) Baird of Edmonton died, peacefully, at the age of 89.

He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Georgia, and by his parents.

Richard was born in 1929, the son of Helen Youngs and Alan Baird, in Davenport, Iowa. He earned a B.A. at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois where he met his future wife, Georgia Curran. After marrying and working while Georgia completed an MA from the University of Chicago, Richard completed his own studies there, culminating with a PhD. They subsequently immigrated to Canada where Richard had accepted a position as a professor of political science at the University of Alberta.

Richard was an outgoing character who relished meeting new people and engaging them in conversation. He also valued his privacy and time with his wife, dogs and cats in their home which they filled with mementos over the years of their many travels. He taught scores of students about politics, but also of truth, beauty and goodness. Many U of A students were introduced to Jane Austen and the arts through Max. He loved debating, and teaching and challenging students to think critically. He was a true professor in the teaching sense - a vocation he took seriously. He had many additional interests including baseball, weather patterns, trail riding and classical music. Max was a devout Christian and Anglican and strove to live a good life.

Max would have wanted to thank all those who helped to care for and support him in the last few years.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 12 noon at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 10037 - 84 Avenue, Edmonton.

? Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Cremation has taken place.
