Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Gerald Byron’s sudden passing at the age of 80 years.

Gerald was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland, on March 9, 1938. At the age of 22 he made the decision to immigrate to Canada. He arrived in Alberta on October 3, 1960 and has called Edmonton home ever since.

Gerald was an active participant in his faith community and it was through this involvement that he eventually met Lorraine, his future wife. Shortly thereafter, Gerald studied at the University of Alberta where he earned his Bachelor of Education degree. He especially enjoyed teaching adult English language learners and was very well liked by his students. Outside of work, Gerald had a passion for history and English literature. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors admiring nature.

Gerald is survived by Lorraine (Piquette), his wife of 47 years; daughter, Helen (Jeff Emeny); grandsons, Alexander and Luke; sister, Norah McGlone (West Australia); brothers, Norman and George (Northern Ireland). He is predeceased by his parents, William and Charlotte (Gröschel); brothers, William, David, and Harold Byron.

Our family wishes to thank the Cardiac Care Unit staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their compassionate care during Gerald’s final hours. A private memorial service and interment will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chalice Canada at www.chalice.ca

In Loving Memory of
Gerald Byron
