Wes Covington

Wes Covington, age 79, passed away on July 4, 2011 after a long hard fought battle with cancer. Wes is survived by his wife Pat; daughters Abby Covington of Durham, North Carolina and Chantel Covington; 3 step-sons Jeff, Randal and Kirby (Natalie) Kazeil; 2 step-daughters Leesa Sadden (David) and Jodi Kazeil; and 12 step-grandchildren Christopher, Alexis, Iyshie, Toby, Kasia, Kelsey, Kennedy, Kendal, John, Samara, Madison and Jack. He was predeceased by daughter Regina, brother, mother and father. Wes, a private person by nature, worked for the Edmonton Sun for 25 years, but his greatest accomplishment was playing for the Milwaukee Braves when they won the 1957 World Series. Like the man himself, the private box down the first base line at Telus Field during the Trapper days was impeccable. He was an ambassador for the club and a credit to the game. A career .279 hitter with 131 home runs and 499 RBI, Wes is described in the baseball encyclopedia as ďa notorious time-waster at the plate.Ē Hobbled the way he was, itís not surprising that he could not outrun cancer when it came for him. The battle was fought gallantly for almost two years but it was lost Monday night. We will miss this gentle giant with the soft hands and softer heart, the quick bat and quicker wit.

In Loving Memory of
Wes Covington
