Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Jan Nigrin

It is with great sadness and tears that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Jan Nigrin on July 11, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with myeloma.

Jan was born on May 1st, 1939, in Velky Osek, Czech Republic, as the second son of five siblings. His love for his family knew no bounds. His selflessness shone through at a young age, especially after the death of his little brother and his fatherís serious illness when he became his motherís helper.

Janís love and passion for mathematics and physics was the deciding factor for pursuing postgraduate studies after finishing his degree in electrical engineering at CVUT in Podebrady. He obtained his first doctorate from the Academy of Sciences in Prague (CSc) and then his second doctorate from the University of Birmingham in England. Jan was a researcher through and through. After coming to Canada in September 1969, he did research at the University of Alberta in the Electrical Engineering department and then for AGT/Telus. After his retirement from Telus, he founded Radio Performance Inc. which led to the development of several telecommunications patents. Jan not only pursued the sciences, but he also loved and excelled in sports, especially soccer. In his young adult years, while playing soccer for Lokomotiva Kolin, he was loved by local soccer fans for his ability to make game changing saves by intercepting the ball at the last minute. He was also proficient in many other sports, namely volleyball, tennis and skiing and he taught the whole family, including his wife, his daughters and his grandson. We are all grateful that he was a demanding instructor as he taught us well. Another one of Janís passions was music, classical and choral, but he loved folk music as well. However, his passion for dance and singing was even greater, whether doing folk dancing as a young man or ballroom dancing with his wife and daughters. His love for music started with playing the violin, but later grew to a love for the French horn. For many years, he sang in the church choir at St. Agnes Church and in the Czech and Slovak choir of Edmonton.

Jan was always willing to help anyone who needed it, whether asked for or not. Being one of the members of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Trinity Council, he liked to help with various volunteer activities organized by the Knights, while his health allowed. He was also very involved in helping the Czech and Slovak Catholic Mission. For his wife and family, he was their biggest support and source of strength.

Jan will forever be remembered by his loving wife and life partner of 52 years, Jana, his two daughters, Jana Polasek (Martin) and Vera Nigrin, and his beloved grandson, Pavel Polasek. Jan will also be lovingly remembered by his two brothers, Otakar Nigrin (Zdena) and Josef Nigrin (Miloslava), by his sister, Bozena Rusova (Miloslav), by his brother in law, Pavol Mikula (Ivanka), and by many nieces and a nephew and their families. He was predeceased by his little brother, Frantisek, and his parents, Bozena and Otakar Nigrin.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sandhu and Dr. Patocka for their compassionate care during Janís illness, Valika Kaliniak for her loving and tireless help, Martin Cervenan for his friendship and help, and Joseph Owusu for being the best caregiver Jan could have wished for, and to many other friends and neighbors.

In Loving Memory of
Jan Nigrin
