Annie Michalko

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Annie Veronica Michalko of Sherwood Park, Alberta on May 15, 2018 at the age of 78 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years Ed; her children Debra Martin (Stewart), Dawn Lucey (Christopher), and Doug Michalko (Kristen); and her grandchildren Alysha Martin, Jessica Martin, Zach Lucey, and Sean Lucey. She will also be missed by her sisters Mary Holash (Joe d.), Betty Lundgard (Donald), and her brother John Ziobro. Ann is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Helen Ziobro, her sisters Vicky Meyer (Alvin) and Kay Richter (Joe), and her brother Edward Ziobro (Sophie).

Annie was born on March 21, 1940 in Westlock, Alberta. She was the youngest child of Joseph and Helen Ziobro amongst five sisters and two brothers. Family and friends often describe Ann as being a very quiet and shy young girl.

After finishing high school, Ann left the family farm to take her nursing degree at the Edmonton General Hospital and then her Operation Room Training in Montreal. It was during her first Operating Room job in Prince Albert that Ann met the love of her life, Ed, on a blind date. Approximately 3 years later on April 30, 1965, the two were married in Edmonton Alberta with a second reception in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan.

Ann found joy in spending time with her family especially her grandchildren, shopping, puzzle building, and outdoor adventures such as hiking, hunting, and fishing. She was compassionate, empathetic, supportive, selfless and her unconditional love will continue to be felt by those who remember. Ann was the best mother and grandmother anyone could hope for and was always there for her entire family.

In August 2012, Ann was diagnosed with Mesothelioma and given 3-8 months to live. Over the next 6 years, Annís tenacity proved all the doctors wrong. She used her time and good health to create the best years of her marriage and bond her family even closer.

On May 15, 2018 Ann passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton; following two weeks of amazing care from the palliative team there and lots of time, love and laughter with her family.

Throughout her journey with cancer Ann benefitted from the expertise and world-class care provided at the Cross Cancer Institute. Ann participated in and benefited from the research done through this institution. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Alberta Cancer Foundation at albertacancer.ca
