Rena Mae Collins

Rena Mae Collins (neč Piscia), age 82, died on Thursday, April 19th, 2018, in St. Albert with loving family at her side.

She was born at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and grew up in and around Viking. She was the only child of Mario, a section foreman for the CN Rail Company, and Helen Piscia, a school teacher.

Rena Mae moved to Edmonton to attend St. Mary’s High School and lived with her Aunt Kate, Uncle Joe and her cousins, Andy, Melvin and Lorraine. She became a medical secretary and worked at the Workers' Compensation Board. At a weekly television night hosted by her aunt Martha Tesan, her cousin Martin arranged for her to meet a shy but charismatic young man from Newfoundland. John Collins soon became the love of her life. They married, and, together over the course of 60 years, they built a life that included many happy years raising their family in St. Albert, cottage life on Argentia Beach at Pigeon Lake and extensive travel. Rena Mae loved her friends and family dearly. She frequently hosted large fun-filled gatherings with flair, loved to cook, played the piano with verve and skill for many a sing-a-longs, and her children and grandchildren would tell you she was really Mrs. Christmas. Rena Mae was a great listener and a sought-after coffee companion. She was a strong, hardworking, warm, caring and wise person with a wonderful sense of humour, who will be sorely missed by all.

Rena Mae is survived by four children, Peggi (Tom Lysyk), Kathy, Linda (Rui Umezawa) and Sean (Carla Murray); ten grandchildren: Chris Lysyk (Gillian Boylan), Dan Lysyk (Margot Biggs), Matthew Fowler (Laurel Richards), Michele Fowler, Joseph Fowler, Aria Umezawa (Steve Aylward), Kai Umezawa (Emily Sim), Koji Umezawa, Jonah Collins, Elliot Collins; five great-grandchildren (so far), Simon and Jeremy Lysyk, Natalie, Mary and Harvey Lysyk.

The Collins family would like to extend our gratitude to all of the palliative care staff at the Sturgeon General Hospital for their responsive and knowledgeable care.

At her request, a Private ceremony will be held. Memorials may be made in Rena Mae’s name to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

In Loving Memory of
Rena Mae Collins
