Mel Green

Peacefully and surrounded by family, Mary Imelda “Mel” Green (nee Murnaghan) passed away at 11:27 a.m., Wednesday, February 14, 2018 in Edmonton, Alberta. She was 70 years old.

After bravely surviving two recent open heart surgeries, she succumbed to a rare heart cancer on the day of love, with her Valentine at her bedside.

Mel is remembered for her outgoing personality, infectious smile and warm heart. She was a dedicated wife and mother, a loyal and caring friend and was a deeply devoted member of the many communities to which she belonged.

Mel is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Thomas Allan; their six children, Christopher (Karin), Nathan (Ashlie), Matthew, Graham (Dawn), Mary Ellen (Albert) and Katherine; and their eight grandchildren, Cullen, Lydia, Malcolm, Noah, Reese, Jacob, Luke and Isaiah. She is also survived by her mother, Helen Murnaghan; and her four younger siblings, Norman (Dorothy), Danny, Nora and Peter (Rita). She was predeceased by her father, Raymond Felix Murnaghan, who died suddenly when she was 16. Mel also had many loving in-laws who made a lasting impact on her life; Paul (Deborah), Georgina (Charlie), James Lea (Denise), Shirley (Leo), Mary Alice (Bill), Nancy (Danny), Roger (Jenine); and countless nieces and nephews who loved her so much.

Mel grew up in Charlottetown, PEI on Birchwood Street, before her family moved to Riverview, NB. She graduated from Riverview Heights High School before moving back to PEI to attend St. Dunstan's University. She transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Saint John, NB where she studied Medical Radiologic Technology. She married Thomas in Edmonton, AB in 1970 before returning to PEI to raise their children.

Mel had a lengthy career as an X-ray technician and worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown. She was a Councilor for the Town of Southport for six years and was instrumental in building key infrastructure like the Rosebank/Zakem Heights Park and served on the building committee for Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Stratford.

She was an avid gardener, an intrepid traveler and was talented in the arts; needlework, quilting, painting, stained glass, sewing and more. She was a gifted homemaker and always made people feel welcome at her table. She was passionate about her Catholic faith and life-long learning.
