It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Former Mayor, Terry Cavanagh. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his wife June of 67 years in 2015, son Terry in 2010; brothers Ian and Barney and his parents, Elizabeth and Dominic.

Poppa Terry will be missed and lovingly remembered by his daughters Gay (Ron) Coyle and Valerie (Dennis) Fitzgerald; daughter-in-law Leslie Cavanagh and grandchildren: Carolyn (Brougham) Deegan, Christopher (Alexandra) Broderick, Sara Cavanagh, Johanna Cavanagh, Terry Cavanagh, Jonathan (Carrie) Fitzgerald, Kelly (Keith) Atkinson, and 10 great grandchildren Broderick Deegan, Jack and Ava Broderick, Parker and Bentley Fitzgerald, Cameron Jackson, Dominic and Evangeline Cavanagh, Hannah John and Addison Paul. He also leaves his sister Patricia, brother-in-law Gary (Esther) Gould and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Edmonton, he later played hockey for the Galt Red Wings, where he was a teammate of Gordie Howe. He later played for the Dallas Texans, Valleyfield Braves, Los Angeles Ramblers and the Trail Smoke Eaters.

Terry was a devout Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of Toast Masters International, The Purchasing Management Association of Canada, the Royal Lifesaving Society and many more boards and comittees. He taught Effective Speaking and Purchasing at Victoria Composite High School, NAIT, U of A Faculty of Extension and Grant MacEwan College. His accomplishments while on Edmonton City Council and as Mayor were many but he was very proud to save the Hotel MacDonald from the wrecking ball and his advocacy for the development of Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River Valley as a park area.
