Obituary

Peacefully at the Carmel of St. Joseph, Spruce Grove, Mother Teresa of Jesus,O.C.D., foundress, passed into eternal life, on November 24th, aged 91, in the 62nd year of her religious life. Born March 5, 1925 in Cardiff, South Wales – Great Britain, to William Joseph Fox and Mary (O’Farrell), Maureen was their only daughter and Fr. Francis Patrick Joseph, I.C. was their only son. Raised in a family where religion was of first importance, she entered the Carmelite Monastery in Bridell, Cardige on September 15, 1952. On March 24, 1953 she received the Carmelite Habit and made her Perpetual Profession on March 25, 1957. She served as Novice Mistress at Bridell Carmel from 1966 – 1972. From 1974 – 1978 she was Secretary of the Association of Carmels of Great Britain in its formative stage. With the closure of Bridell Carmel in 1975, Mother Teresa stayed temporarily at Darlington Carmel for Association work and she was Novice Mistress there during that time. She went to help the Carmel in Macau in April 1978 and became Novice Mistress in December, 1978. She was the Prioress of the Macau Carmel from January 1985 and has held the office of Prioress for 31 consecutive years until her death in November, 2016. In March 1990, Mother Teresa of Jesus arrived in Canada with 7 other sisters to found the Carmelite Monastery of St. Joseph in Spruce Grove, Alberta which opened May 31. 1993. Mother Teresa wrote 3 biographies of Confessors of the Faith in the Suffering Church in China. She was in close contact with faithful Chinese priests and laity who had suffered in Chinese labour camps and prisons and she worked zealously until the time of her death to assist them, to educate others, and to promote a global awareness of the persecuted Church in China, which continues to this present day. Over the years, she brought loving assistance, support, and advice to many all over the world through her outstanding holiness of life, friendship, support, ardent prayers, and wise counsel.

Mother Teresa of Jesus is survived by her religious sisters, her dear cousin, Mrs. Carmel Molloy, first cousin, Mr. Oliver Fox, and her nephew, Mr. Julian Fox. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Fr. Francis Fox.

Please pray for the peaceful repose of her soul. We feel sure that our beloved Mother will be helping you from heaven.
