Esther McDonald

With heavy hearts and much sadness, the family of Esther McDonald announces her peaceful passing on November 4, 2016, surrounded by family. Esther will be forever loved and remembered.

Her spirit and feistiness will live on through her family, husband, Don; children, Joanne, Gary (Rita), Ken (Heather), Gail (Terry), Allen (Yves), and Neil (Laurie); grandchildren, Brett, Jillian (Kody), Deanne, (Billie), Neill, Kristen (Andrew), Katie, and Allie; and a special ďadopted sonĒ, Ken Chalmers. Two of Estherís twelve siblings survive her, Lucy James, and Barbara Bolen. Esther was predeceased by her grandson, David; as well as nine brothers and sisters, Lawrence, Anne, Hank, John, Jim, Ted, Tress, Martin, and Margaret.

Esther was able to leave this world on one of the warmest November days on record. Warm and sunny days spent in her large vegetable garden or working in her flower beds were her absolute favourite ways to spend her time. Her family and friends were spoiled by her cooking and baking expertise, like homemade cinnamon buns and shortbread! Estherís creations were the centerpiece of many noisy family dinners spent ďdebatingĒ any topic that might come up.

Estherís family sincerely thanks Dr. Doug MacIver for being an excellent physician, and caring for Mom for many years. Mom moved to Foyer Lacombe in January of this year, and we are tremendously grateful to the dedicated individuals who looked after Momís care needs night and day; as well as the retired Oblates who supported Esther in their prayers and daily interactions with her. We are also very appreciative of the care provided to her by AHS Home Care staff; Colleen Rekken helped immensely with Momís transition to long term care. The family also extends a special thank you to the team at the Adult Day Program at the Sturgeon Community Hospital for their enthusiasm and energy in creating an environment and activities that Mom felt comfortable in and enjoyed prior to Foyer Lacombe.

We are so fortunate to have had health care staff in home care, long term care, emergency departments and hospital units whose work with Mom, and the sick and elderly, comes from their personal and genuine care and compassion for others.

In celebration of Estherís life, a Catholic Mass, officiated by Father Al Roy, OMI, will take place at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that you consider a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Suite 144, 5241 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton AB, T6H 5G8, or to a charity of your choice.

Thank you everyone for your care and concern; we appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

In Loving Memory of
Esther McDonald
