Albert Gieck

Bert Gieck, 95, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2016.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Esther Gieck (nee Ohlhauser); their only child, Melody Lane, of Columbia, Maryland, and her children James Kulak (Char) of St. Albert, Holly Kulak (Brad) of Sonoma CA, and Tim Kulak (Bob) of Edmonton.

Born in Leader, SK, Bert lived in Lodi, CA, and then grew up in Carbon, AB, where he met Esther. Bert and Esther moved to Calgary in 1946, where Melody was born, and finally to Edmonton in 2013, where they resided at Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence.

Bert ended his career as the longtime manager of the Marlborough Safeway in Calgary. He loved his work and his staff called him "Papa." Bert and Esther travelled to many places in the world, but for 27 years, they returned each winter to Waikiki, where they enjoyed membership privileges at the Hale Koa Hotel.

Bert was active in many sports, including skiing, curling, fishing and golf. In later years, he was a dedicated fan of hockey, football, and baseball. He was a constant reader and he kept up with current events.

Bert was a kind, quiet, and humble man with many loyal friends, who will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed.

There will not be a service.

In lieu of flowers, it would be an honour if anyone wished to make a donation in Bert's name, to a charity of their choosing.

In Loving Memory of
Albert Gieck
