Obituary

With sadness and love, the family of Wilf Boman announces that on March 19, 2016 Wilf’s courageous battle with cancer ended peacefully, surrounded by family in Foyer Lacombe hospice in St. Albert.

He was predeceased by his father, Frank Boman (1963); his mother, Dorothy Boman (nee Stevenson) (2008); and his beloved daughter, Patti-Ann (1969). He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Pauline Boman (nee Boisvert); daughter, Teresa (Michael) Meadows; grandsons: Kieran and Conor Meadows. He is also survived by his brother, Bob (Dot) Boman; sister, June (Wilf) Francis; sisters in law: Josephine Russell, Louise (Laurent) DeChamplain; and brothers in law: Paul (Gladys) Boisvert and Ed (Vera) Boisvert, as well as honorary daughter, Carrie (Mark) Froehler and son, Trevor Froehler; numerous nephews; nieces; extended family and dear friends.

Wilf was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. From 1958 to his retirement in 1997 he worked for the Government of Alberta in various communities and various social service capacities, including as a psychiatric nurse, social worker, administrator, regional director and liaison with AADAC’s funded agencies. When not working or camping, Wilf enjoyed sports as both a participant and fan. When a broken leg forced him to give up playing baseball he shifted his focus to curling and golf, activities he continued until 2012. Since April 2011 when he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and with his own personal nurse, Pauline, by his side he participated in drug trials, underwent radiation and chemotherapy and generally offered himself as a “guinea pig” in the hope of furthering cancer research. He defied the odds several times and while his family mourns his passing we know Wilf truly “left it all on the field”.

Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at St. Albert Catholic Parish, 7 St. Vital Avenue, St. Albert, Alberta with Reverend Al Roy, OMI as celebrant.

Wilf’s family would like to thank the wonderful care providers at the Cross Cancer Institute, in particular, Dr. North, Dr. Yee, Richard Littleton and Carlie Smith and all the amazing staff in the Palliative Unit of Foyer Lacombe for giving care and comfort to Wilf in his last weeks.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory is encouraged to donate to cancer research at Alberta Cancer Foundation, Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 9Z9 or on-line at http://albertacancer.ca/cross-cancer-institute or the palliative care unit at Foyer Lacombe Hospice care of the St. Albert Sturgeon Hospice Association, PO Box 65105, Mission Hill Plaza, St. Albert, AB T8N 5Y3 or on-line at http://sasha-cares.com/donate/
