Blake McDougall



On December 26, 2015, Donald Blake McDougall passed away following a brief illness at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his wife Norma (Peacock) McDougall and his brother Daniel (Sheila) and family of Calgary.

Blake was born at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and was raised in the three communities of Boharm, Rosetown, and Regina in that province. He was a graduate of the universities of Saskatchewan (B.A., B.Ed.), Toronto (B.L.S.), and Alberta (M.L.S.). Blake also volunteered for service in the Canadian Army (Reserve) as an officer in the Royal Canadian Artillery and Royal Canadian Regiment.

He worked professionally as a classroom teacher and vice-principal for the Regina Board of Education; served as Assistant Chief Librarian and then Chief Librarian for the Stratford Public Library; Supervisor of Information Services and then Head of Public Services for the Edmonton Public Library, Legislature Librarian an then Assistant Deputy Minister/Legislature Librarian for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. While employed by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and during his retirement, he wrote a number of articles and publications.

Blake served on the Board of Managers, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Stratford, Ontario; as an Elder and Clerk of Session of First Presbyterian Church, Edmonton; Chairperson, Alberta Government Libraries’ Council; and President of the Association of Parliamentary Librarians in Canada. He was awarded a Government of Saskatchewan Scholarship, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and was named an Honorary Clerk-at-the-Table, Legislative Assembly of Alberta. He was also an honorary member of the Association of Parliamentary Librarians in Canada, and a long-time member of the Greater Edmonton, Alberta, and Canadian library associations; Beta Phi Mu (International Library Honorary Society); and Historical Society of Alberta.

A Memorial Service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 Street, Edmonton.

The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the Doctors and staff on Units 53 and 43 at the Grey Nuns Hospital for their compassion and care.

Those who so wish may make memorial donations to the Salvation Army or Caritas Foundation (Grey Nuns).
