Obituary

With deep sadness the family announces the death of Gerry Lucas in Edmonton on September 28, 2015. Gerry was born in Winnipeg on August 21, 1937. Because his father was an officer in the R.C.M.P, the family was required to move frequently when Gerry was in school. He attended Victoria Composite High School in Edmonton where he became editor of the yearbook and a football player. As a student at the University of Alberta Gerry was appointed to the honorary Gold Key Society for his role in student governance. He graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1962 and began to practise law in Edmonton as a commercial lawyer before specializing as a labour lawyer and arbitrator. He was also proud of his early contribution to family law in the province when he became the first lawyer to obtain a writ of habeas corpus to compel a putative father to surrender custody of his child. And long before it became an accepted practice, Gerry also persuaded a judge to appoint a lawyer to represent the interests of a child in a custody dispute. Gerry became the senior partner at Lucas, Bowker & White (later merged with Davis & Co.). In addition, in 1984 he was appointed as a vice chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board, a position he held until his death. He was widely respected in the legal community for his work in the field of commercial law as well as in labour relations, and admired for his superb legal mind, dedication to the law, impeccable integrity, management skills, unfailing courtesy and kindness, and his calm and patient manner. He was the very model of a reasonable and honourable man. He was adored by his family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Helen (nee Taylor) and his older brother Murray. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife Peggy, children Kathy Hutchings (Fred), Jeff (Laura Selby), Ann Johnston (Rob), Jack (Karen), grandchildren Taylor, Jordan, Paul, Spencer, Luke, Alex, Sara, Alexa and Charlie, sister The Honourable Anne Russell, Q.C. (Dr. Don),and his extended family.

A Mass will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015 at St. Joseph's Basilica at 10044 - 113 Street, Edmonton at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Basilica O'Leary Hall.

Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Gerry to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

In Loving Memory of
Gerald Alan Lucas
