Alexander "Sandy" Petrovitch

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander “Sandy” Petrovitch who slipped away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at the age of ninety-three, in Edmonton, Alberta.

Born on May 27, 1922, to his parents, John and Mary Petrovitch, Sandy leaves to mourn his loving wife Pauline of 69 years; two daughters, Judith Weaver and husband, Bruce, of Vancouver Island and Kathryn Petrovitch of Edmonton. Sandy and Pauline are very proud grandparents of Dawn Weaver and her partner, Peter, of Airdrie, Alberta and Byron Weaver and his wife, Lynn, of Shawnigan Lake, BC. They spent many happy hours with their great-grandchildren, Cale Alexander Bonn of Airdrie and Jiya Juniper Weaver of Shawnigan Lake, BC. Sandy also leaves to mourn his sisters, Nora Craig of Edmonton and Margie Letain of Victoria, BC; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In 1936, Sandy became a founding member of the Edmonton School Boys Band playing the flute and piccolo. In 1996, a 60-year reunion of the band was held with 45 members rehearsing to perform for the reunion and Sandy was reunited with many close friends from his youth.

In his early years, Sandy became a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and began weekend and evening performances in and around Edmonton. It was during this time that he met many who would remain some of his closest life-long friends.

Sandy was also a 50-year member of the Free Masons, Empire Lodge No. 63.

Sandy had a long career in the electronic and tool industries, working in sales and management in Edmonton. In his early, married years, Sandy enjoyed visiting Pauline’s family farm north of Tofield and fishing with his brothers-in-law. Later, Sandy and Pauline purchased a cottage at Wabamun Lake and there, together with family and friends, spent many happy hours sailing the “Gemini”, a sailboat he had built in his basement one winter.

Interment of the urn will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at South Haven Cemetery, 5004 Meridian Street, Edmonton. A Memorial Service for Sandy will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home – Edmonton South Chapel, 4820 Meridian Street, Edmonton. (Meridian Street can only be accessed heading SOUTH on Hwy 216 (Anthony Henday); - the access is 1 km south of the Sherwood Park Freeway on Hwy 216.)

In lieu of flowers, it is asked that contributions be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 10985-124 Street, Edmonton, AB, T5M 0H9.

In Loving Memory of
Alexander "Sandy" Petrovitch
