Obituary

Reta Marion Amell (nee Ash) passed away peacefully in Edmonton, on Monday, 13 July 2015 at the age of 95. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Gerry, in 1954.

She leaves behind her four daughters: Vira Hughes (Don), Vivian Turner (Bob), Verna-Jean Amell (Bruno Iten) and Rhoda Amell; step-son, Bernie Whalen (Bernetta). She was very proud of her eight grandchildren: Ed, Morgan, Bronwyn, Gwynneth, Fergus, Megan, Matthew and Kieran; and three great grandchildren: Alex, Orion and Madison.

She was born in Coleman, in the Crowsnest Pass, to Edgar and Cassie (Carmichael) Ash. She attended teachers college at Calgary Normal School and began teaching grades one to nine in one room Alberta school houses in the spring of 1939. At that time the country schools ran during the spring and summer as the winter weather was considered too severe for children to travel any distance. She taught for two sessions at Itipaw School near Elmworth, one session at Sundial School near Taber, one session at Meadowville School near Wembley, and one session at Rosalda School near Plamondon. She roomed with local families living in all kinds of unusual accommodations. She remembered well one occasion where the old car they travelled in to their final destination had floor boards that were so worn out that she had to hold her feet up to keep them from hitting the ground. The family she stayed with were trappers, with animal skins strung to dry from the rafters of the cabin that they all shared. She also taught school at Coleman Central for several years, and after she moved to Edmonton, she taught grade one to hundreds of children at Edmonton Public Schools, HA Gray Elementary and York Elementary. She was always an advocate that you could teach any child a love of learning, reading, math and science if you approached it the proper way. She loved to sing and play the piano, and was the pianist for many school concerts. She spent her retirement travelling and enjoying her many sports, crafts and hobbies.

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. We would also like to thank all of the wonderful staff at St. Michaelís LTC for their care and support over the last few years.

A Celebration of her life is to be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept 5, 2015 at Connelly-McKinley Edmonton South, 4820 Meridian Street, Edmonton, Alberta.

In Loving Memory of
Reta Marion Amell
