Thomas "Bill" Broad

Thomas William Broad passed away on June 3, 2015, at the age of 93 years.

Bill is survived by his children: Margaret Anne, Robert William, George Hadley (Deb), Mary Ruth (Terry); grandchildren: Amanda, Derek, Rob, Katherine, Alasdair William, Sarah Louise, Andrew David Robert, Thierry Guy; great-grandchildren: Isobel Zhenzhen, Mikhailo Mintai, Lily, Jack; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Emma Louise (née Hadley), and daughter, Elizabeth Louise, and his second wife, Ann (née Baranyk).

Dad was born in the potteries in Stoke-on-Trent, England. When his father died when he was 14, he was forced to leave school and began working at the Rolls Royce aircraft engine factory. He enlisted in the RAF at the age of 18 and eventually transferred to the Commonwealth Air Training Base in Carberry, Manitoba, serving as an Aircraft Mechanic. There he met Emma Louise Hadley, whom he married. Later in the war he served in Italy as well as other bases in England and Canada. After the war, Bill and Louise farmed, but in 1953 moved to Edmonton where he initially worked at Northwest Industries repairing aircraft. His wife Louise had a college education. Unusual at this time, this college education of his wife inspired Bill to improve his own education. He obtained his high school qualifications and attended university in his forties to eventually gain a teaching degree, and later Masters Degree in Vocational Education. From there he began instructing at NAIT. It was at NAIT that he became involved in the union movement, finally becoming President of the Civil Service Association of Alberta from 1972 to 1976. While president, he helped organize the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and became the first president from 1976-1977. In 1978, he was elected president of the National Union of Public and General Employees.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 Street NW, Edmonton.
