Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Douglas Wayne Grimes

We wish to express our great sadness over the passing of our son and brother, Douglas Grimes who passed away May 17, 2015.

Born February 15, 1947, in Edmonton and raised in Alberta and Oklahoma. After completing high school in Bartlesville, during which time he sang in various choirs, Douglas went on to receive a B.Sc. (Ecology) and M.Sc. (Natural Sc.) while attending Oklahoma State University, obtaining a PhD from the University of Phoenix. He served with distinction in the U.S. Marines and while in combat in Vietnam, received three purple hearts and earned a Silver Star.

Survived by his mother, F. Jean Grimes of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; his sister, Suzan E. Stone (Jim) of Edmond, Oklahoma; and brother, Norman (Marsha) of St. Albert, Alberta; his uncle, Steve McEachern (Mary) of Edmonton, Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Simon Lester (Buddy) Grimes.

A creative and productive person of considerable talent, involved in writing poetry and plays, he was also an avid outdoorsman, backpacking, canoeing and camping throughout North America. He taught wilderness survival courses while in the U.S. Marines and gave many public lectures on outdoor arts and recreation. He owned and operated several companies including a canoe manufacturing company and sporting goods store. He was an honest, hardworking, creative person and a seeker of truth.

He always said his claim to fame was he could “tie lots of knots”.

A Private Family Memorial will be held.

We thank the staff of Copper Sky Lodge, Spruce Grove, and especially Valeria, Debbie and Meho, for their excellent care of our son and brother. We also thank the Edmonton Alzheimer’s Society for their considerable support.

Memorial Donations in Douglas’s name may be made to the Alzheimer Society Alberta and NWT, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5H 4K1.

In Loving Memory of
Douglas Wayne Grimes
