Delmar Perras



It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Del Perras announces his sudden passing.

Del is survived by his wife Shirley; daughters, Laurie and Adele; sons, David (Katie) and Les (Chiaki); grandchildren, Aimee, Elena, Sabrina, Gino, Nikola, Jakob, Hugh, Rian, Matthew and Josh; and great grandchildren, Jonathen, Erik, and Abigail. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Chris and many nieces and nephews. Del was predeceased by his mother and father, Florence and James Perras; brother Don Perras; and grandchild Alexa. Del graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Saskatchewan and entered private practice (primarily litigation) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1978. Future legal positions included a Crown Prosecutor, Director of Public Prosecutions, Assistant Deputy Minister for the Criminal Division with Alberta Justice in Edmonton, and Deputy Attorney General, Alberta Justice. He was appointed as a Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench on October 4, 1989 and retired from the Court on October 4, 2006 after seventeen years of service on the Court.

During his career Del published many articles in the Criminal Justice area, researched and presented a comparison paper comparing the Canadian Charter to the American Bill of Rights, and was one of the founding members of the Western Canada Crown Seminar. He was a sessional lecturer in the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan for many years. Del loved the practice of law and after his retirement from the Court of Queen’s Bench, Del became the Chair of the Environmental Appeal Board which he held until his passing on April 18 2015. Del was a very good athlete and played hockey, baseball, numerous racket sports, handball, tennis, and golf. Two of his favorite sports were baseball and golf. Del will be greatly missed by numerous colleagues, his Arizona and Radium golfing friends and lots of friends in Edmonton and Saskatchewan.

A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Del’s life on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Italian Cultural Center, Italia Hall, 14230 – 133 Avenue, Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, The Heart and Stroke foundation or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the Doctors, especially Doctor Mah and the nurses who attended to Del at the University Hospital for their kind and compassionate care.
