Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Elizabeth (Betty) Fox

Betty left us peacefully on February 6, 2015 at Youville Home in St. Albert, Alberta with her niece, Jan by her side.

She will always be remembered by her loving family: her niece Jan (John); her beloved great-niece and nephew, Michael and Sarah; as well as many relatives in Northern Ireland. She will be missed by many friends in Winnipeg and St. Albert.

Betty was born at home on March 27, 1926 in Scarva, County Down, Northern Ireland. She was the eldest daughter of John and Sarah Fox (nee McVeigh) The family immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled in Winnipeg. Betty attended St. Anne’s Parochial School and St. Mary’s Academy. After High School she challenged the Public Service Entrance Exam and achieved the highest score of her cohort. She then joined the federal Public Service and began an illustrious 48 year career with the Department of Veterans Affairs at Deer Lodge Hospital where she began in the X-Ray Department and later was promoted to Executive Assistant to the hospital Administrator.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, John and Sarah; her sister and best friend, Kathleen; and her beloved brother, Pat.

Betty was well liked by all who crossed her path. She was best known for her quick wit, love of current affairs and terrific sense of humour. She was a woman of very strong faith. She loved to spend time with her niece and family and especially took pride in the many accomplishments of her great niece and nephew. She was so proud of their many accomplishments. Following the death of her dear sister, she acquired a new and very special family member – Sam the cat. Anyone who knew Betty knows that Sam was a special light in her life. They gave each other great joy. Betty and Sam spent the last one and half years of her life in St. Albert surrounded by her loving family. We will always treasure this special time we shared. We are grateful that Sam continues to bring us joy. While in St. Albert she reconnected with many friends she had met during her frequent visits to be with family. She loved her visits to the Farmers Market and the Irish Pub. She travelled with us to Whitefish, Montana and loved it there. Mostly she loved her political debates with John and his home cooking!

Betty was an avid gardener and over the years tended to many gardens including in St. Albert. She was a talented photographer and we are grateful for the beautiful pictures she has left for us. Betty loved to travel and she and her sister Kay shared many great trips in Canada but her favourite was their trip to Ireland where she spent time with family.

Although this is a time of sadness, it is also a time to celebrate the life of a wonderful woman who touched our lives in such a special way.

The family is especially grateful to the staff at Youville Home who ensured her last days were filled with love, spirituality and comfort. We also want to thank the many friends in St. Albert who brightened her days. Thanks also to Rita and Laurette for their amazing friendship and support.
