Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Reverend John Alan MacGregor, CSsR

Father Alan MacGregor died quietly on Tuesday 27 January shortly after celebrating his ninetieth birthday. He was born in Edmonton, son of Hugh Alton MacGregor and Anna Smith, and grew up in Edmonton, Foremost, and Camrose in Alberta, and in Ithaca, New York. Known as a bruiser on the ice by his high school hockey teammates. He received the Governor-General’s Academic Medal in the Grade 9 High School Entrance Examinations for academic excellence.

Even as a small child he knew that he would become a priest. He promised religious vows as a Redemptorist in 1944 in Saint John, NB, and last year celebrated his seventieth year as a Redemptorist. Ordained a priest in 1949 at Woodstock, ON, he served throughout much of Canada.

To prepare for ministry he obtained a BA from Assumption College in Windsor, ON, in 1951, and a certificate from the College of Education in Toronto in 1952. In 1962 he received a BEd from the University of Alberta and in 1969 an MA in Classics from the Catholic University of America.

He taught at St. Mary’s College in Brockville, ON, at Holy Redeemer College in Edmonton and at Vanier College in Moose Jaw, SK. Among the parishes where he lived and served were St. Gerard in Yorkton, SK, St. Theresa in Kelowna, BC, St. Mary in Saskatoon, SK, St. Joseph in Moose Jaw, SK, and St. Patrick in Toronto.

Fr. Alan was an enthusiastic and voracious reader of serious books who also enjoyed everything related to the “Peanuts” cartoon strip. He loved music, listening to CDs whenever he could. He was devoted to his family and made it a particular point each year to spend his vacation with them in Edmonton.

He is predeceased by his mother and father and by his brother Ronald Alton. He is survived by his sister Marguerite Ann and brother-in-law Fred Ragan; sister-in-law Louise MacGregor; nephews Frederick (Maria-Theresia) Ragan, Alexander Ragan, John Alan MacGregor, Ranald (Giselle) MacGregor, Alton “Sandy” (Anne-Marie) MacGregor, Colin (Lesly) MacGregor, and Bernard (Richelle) MacGregor; nieces Fiona (Thomas) Braun and Rose-Marie (Christopher) Photinopoulos, and great-niece Poppy Braun.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Youville Home, the Sturgeon Hospital and of the other hospitals who cared for him.

A vigil of prayer will be held on Friday 30 January at 7:30 pm and the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday 31 January at 10:30 am, both at St. Clare Parish, 6310 118 Ave. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton.

In Loving Memory of
Reverend John Alan MacGregor, CSsR
