Obituary

Joanne Elizabeth McCune passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Friday, December 26, 2014. Joanne was born and raised on a farm near Scotsguard, Saskatchewan, and the prairies always remained dear to her heart. She went to Normal School in Moose Jaw and taught in a number of one-room schools in south-western Saskatchewan. She married Victor McCune in 1948 and they settled in Edmonton.

Joanne was a dedicated and loving wife and mother who efficiently managed a family of four boys and four girls. She always made delicious meals and home baking, found time to sew clothes for the family, ensured they all had opportunities for sports and visual/performing arts, and attended a myriad of events and performances. Joanne and Victor and the younger children lived overseas in Indonesia in the early 80’s. On their return, she volunteered as an ESL instructor with Catholic Social Services and volunteered at Fort Edmonton, as well as continuing her CWL activities for St. Andrew’s Parish. She instilled the values of education, hard work, volunteering and humour into her family.

She is survived by her 8 children and their spouses: Pat and Kate of New Westminster, John and Sharon of Edmonton, Cathy and Alfred Bagdan of St. Albert, Maggie and Ron Nichol of Edmonton, Lawrence and Laurie of Lethbridge, Liz and George Noel of Edmonton, Dave and Michele Wilson-McCune of Spruce Grove, and Mary Jo and Marty Lunde of Edmonton. Grandma Joanne cherished her 22 grandchildren: Colin, Sean, Anne, John, Alex (Dana), David, Kerry, Hugh, Mariel, Kara, Laura, Jeff, Sarah, Andrea (Jordan), Steven, Brian, Gabrielle, Danielle, Joel, Rosie, Rebecca and Luke. She was the biggest supporter and cheerleader for her children and grandchildren.

Joanne is also survived by her brother, Rev. John Wilson of Toronto; sister-in-law, Dolly Wilson of Scotsguard; brother-in-law, Maynard McCune of Edmonton, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Victor in 1985; sister, Mary Winnitoy and brother, Bernard Wilson. Special thanks to Analyn Cipriano and the Hardisty Care Centre for their care of Joanne during her final years.

A Visitation will be held at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, January 2, 2015 with a Prayer Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 12810 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the same location. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Social Services, 10709-105 Street, Edmonton, AB, T5H 2X3.

In Loving Memory of
Joanne McCune
(Maiden: Wilson)
