Lena Cogill

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lena “Dolly” Cogill, who passed from our arms to the arms of God on Sunday, August 17th, 2014 at 94 years of age.

Born Lena Grossman on June 9th, 1920 in Edmonton, Dolly grew up with the companionship of 7 siblings; Bill, Elsie, Fred, Lilly, Henry, Violet & Adeline. She was given her nickname, “Dolly” as a child from the nursery rhyme “Little Dolly Dimples”. Dolly was an athlete and sports enthusiast from a young age and in later years she was always happy to cheer on her children and grandchildren at their sporting events. She was a big fan of the Eskimos and the Oilers. Other passions included gardening and sharing her holistic and natural approach to good health.

Dolly was married on September 4th, 1940 to a neighborhood friend, Harold Cogill. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage and 8 children. While very busy raising children, Dolly worked for the City of Edmonton as a Family Aide Worker. Always important to Dolly was the support and fellowship of the Catholic Communities of St. James, Assumption and St. Agnes Parishes, where she was also a CWL member for 63 years.

Celebrating Dolly’s life are her children: Harry (Betty) Cogill of Blue Mountain, Ontario; Margie (Jaan Scheel) Cogill of Victoria, British Columbia; Carolyn (Bob Clarke) of Lake Country, British Columbia; Bobby Cogill of Edmonton; Barb (Roy Rolheiser) of Edmonton; Chera (Glenn McMeckan) of Victoria, British Columbia; Michael Cogill of Edmonton; and Basil (Becky) Cogill of Summerland, British Columbia. Cherishing the beautiful memories of their Granny are Dolly’s 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren: Jim (Laura) Cogill children Katherine and John; Alan (Leslie) Cogill children Ryan and Laura; Nancy (Rodin Lozada) children Gabriel, Theo, Stella and Jordan; Chris (Anja) Battie children Royce and Penny; Scott (Dale) Clarke children Jake and Meah; Trevor (Jenni) Clarke son Kingston; Kelsey Rolheiser (Ryan Ruffell); Taylor Rolheiser (Ken Donnelly); Reese Rolheiser (Kristine Sochatsky); Gil Cogill (Hayley Cipro); Tully (Christy) Cogill daughter Quinn.

Dolly was predeceased by her husband Harold and sister-in-law Margaret Cogill, as well as her 7 siblings.

Dolly will be remembered for her kindness, her ability to listen, devotion to her family, her hugs and deep prayer life. While she faced health challenges, we are grateful for her example of dignity, bravery and unfailing faith in God. The family expresses profound thanks to Dr. Allison Theman, Dolly’s long time physician and partner in her health, and to Dr. Jason Sabo and staff whose efforts and exceptional care brought health and comfort to her over the years. We greatly appreciate the care and compassion shown to our Mom and our family at the University of Alberta Hospital.

Mom, Granny: we thank you, we love you, we treasure you always!

God gave the world stars…

and there was beauty…

God gave the world sun…

and there was warmth…

God gave the world rain…

and there was life…

God gave the world mothers…

and there was love.

In Loving Memory of
Lena Cogill
