Robert Green

Robert (Bob) Green, longtime resident of St. Albert, passed away peacefully in the Misericordia Hospital on July 20, 2014, one week short of his 84th birthday.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Madsen; daughters and grandchildren Alison (John) Green, Valerie (Bill, Michael, Kate), and Jill (Del, Morgan, Matthew) Fallis; former wife Joan; stepdaughters and grandchildren Joy (Jillene, Kyle) Craig and Nora (Alan, Pierce) Kean; brothers Doug (Maggi, Martin) and Geoff (Jen, Elizabeth, Debbie) in England; and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was born July 27, 1930, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, to Elizabeth and Joshua Green. He grew up in Amble, Northumberland, with his two younger brothers, Doug and Geoff, and attended the Duke’s School in Alnwick.

When he was 18 he came to Canada for the first time on an expedition to Quebec with the British School Exploration Society. He went on to do his PhD in geology (micropaleontology) at Durham University, Newcastle, U.K. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to attend Yale University for two years.

One of his professors suggested he go out west and it was then that he fell in love with the blue Alberta skies. Bob accepted a position at the Alberta Research Council where he spent his entire career of 38 years, first as a geologist and then in management.

Bob was a man of many talents: He studied genealogy for 30 years, was an avid gardener, and a talented photographer. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A private memorial was held. Memorial donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut, 10985-124 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5M 0H9 or Edmonton Humane Society, 13620-163 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5V 0B2.

In Loving Memory of
