Egland Andrea Mercier

Egland Andrea Mercier, 95 years, went home to her Lord and Savior on July 16, 2014.

She was born in Edmonton on December 18, 1918, the eldest of four children. Her parents, Alfred Dubord and Anna Vaugeois lived on a farm in Beaumont immediately south of Edmonton. Fred came from North Dakota while Anna had moved from St. Roch de Mekinac, Quebec. Egland was educated at the Morinville Convent and then graduated from Normal School in Camrose, Alberta in 1939. She then taught at the Tellier School in Morinville and then at Ste Bernadette in Picardville near Westlock. It was there she met her husband Noel Mercier (son of Joseph Mercier and Agnes Lagasse of Westlock) whom she married on January 8, 1941. Together they farmed until it was lost to three subsequent years of fall hail. They then moved to Edmonton where together with Pete Germaine they built Mercier & Germaine Plumbing & Heating business in Jasper Place which they operated for 26 years. When Noel retired she continued to work first with a survey company and later managed the Manoir St. Joachim.

Egland was very active in the French Alberta community and was one of the founding members of the Federation of French Canadian Women in Alberta. She also helped to preserve the French Canadian and Metis Art of Finger Weaving (Ceinture Fléchée) by helping to organize The Friends of the Fléchée art at the Franco Albertain’s Artisans Center. She was also a founding member of the Federation of Francophone Seniors for Edmonton (RARE). She then helped establish the Federation of Franco-Albertain seniors (FAFA). She also studied at College St. Jean where she studied theology, sociology and history until she was 91 years old.

Whenever she was confronted with one of life’s heavy burdens her philosophy was “We never forget a close personal loss but when the burden becomes too heavy I cast it upon the Lord.” Her faith always allowed her to move forward with confidence. Egland was predeceased by her husband Noel (2006), eldest daughter Loraine (1966), granddaughter Yaribe (2012), and great-grandson Matthew Epp (2009). She is survived by her children, Eddie (Sharon) Victoria, BC, Marcel (Elaine) Saltspring Island, BC, Suzanne (Tim) Chatham (Kelowna, BC), Daniel (Hanan) Doha, Qatar; grandchildren Diane (Rick) Traber, Michael (Courtenay) Mercier, Nicole (Dwayne) Epp, Myla and Kaalun Chatham, and Jasmine and Camille Mercier; great grandchildren Ronald, Brian, Lauren and Keith; Christian and Emma; Imogen and Juneau . She is also survived by her younger siblings Camille Dubord, Yolande Kodallas, Roland Dubord and her sister-in-law, Denise Ashdown.
