Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Dorothy McVea

On Saturday, July 5th, Dorothy Rose McVea, née Bates, went home to God joining her husband, Bill (d.1994) and youngest son, Christopher (d.1977) after a long and joyful life.

Born in Harwich, England in 1916, Dorothy left her family and came to Canada as a war bride, raising ten children who showed their love and great respect to the end: Michael, Angela (Allan Arendt), Dorothy (Louis Jacques, d. 2013), Christine, Margaret (John Brosseau), Joe (Joan McVea), Peter (Mahshid McVea), Teresa (Gerald Sroka), Cecilia (Ron Malinowski). Dorothy also leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved dearly and counselled wisely over the years. The last of her generation, Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers Ron, Peter, and Jim and sisters, Queenie and Mary, all in England. There are also numerous extended family members in England and Canada.

Dorothy, a devout Catholic, had a strong faith and made a significant commitment to her church. She was a reader at Mass, a faithful Legion of Mary member into her 98th year, and often attended Mass twice daily walking back and forth from St. Andrew’s Church.

Dorothy trained as a primary teacher in England and taught Grade One for many years in Edmonton Catholic Schools, introducing many children to reading. She continued to volunteer at The Learning Centre Literacy Association and at Annunciation School into her nineties. Mum’s love of learning as well as her gift for teaching was her legacy.

Dorothy often mentioned her two great wishes- to have a big family and ensure each of us was well educated. She and Bill achieved both with their extended family of over forty people involved in engineering, law, medicine, teaching, federal administration, social work, real estate, immunology, glaciology, music, political science, physical education and communications.

Many thanks to Dr. Jean Wong, the medical staff at The Royal Alex, Mr. Dave Stoner, Case Manager, and the many health aides who with family, enabled Mum to stay in her own home until the very end.

Prayer Services will be held Thursday July 10th at 7:30 pm at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 St. Reverend Anthony Fernando will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 11th, 10:30 am at St. Andrews Church, 12810-111 Avenue, Edmonton.
