Obituary

It is with shock and great sadness that the family of Brian Michael Kelly announces that he passed away suddenly of heart failure on June 17th, 2014.

Brian is remembered fondly by his brother, Patrick and wife, Nadya; nephews, Sean and Conor; nieces, Alison, Jen (Les) and Joanna (Patrick); sister-in-law Kathy (Dennis) and brother-in-law Don (Ann); and cherished grand-nieces. He was predeceased by his dad, Stan; mom, Olga, and sister, Maureen.

Brian was born in Lac La Biche, Alberta on February 17, 1956, moved to Jasper in 1957 and then to Stony Plain in 1963. He graduated from Memorial High School in 1974 and went on to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Geography in 1978 and his Masters of Science in Geography in 1985. During his University years he worked in the summer as a Seasonal Park Ranger in several provincial parks.

Brian had a long and distinguished career with Alberta Parks and had recently been recognized for 35 years of service. In 1982 he became an Operational Planner in the Field Support Branch of Alberta Parks. He later became a manager holding various positions until becoming the Director of the Policy and Strategic Direction Branch of Alberta Parks in 2009. He was recognized as Parks’ in house expert on Parks’ legislation, regulations and policy matters and worked closely with staff at Alberta Justice and other departments. For many at Alberta Parks he was a friend first and colleague second and he will be greatly missed by his second family at Alberta Parks.

Brian also volunteered with Hostelling International – Canada. He was currently the Chair of the Hostelling International – Canada – Pacific Mountain Board. Just this month, he was awarded the Catherine and Mary Barcly award in Halifax for his 23 years of volunteer work with HI. Once formal discussions were over at HI, Brian always brought his sense of humour and fun along with a bottle of wine or rum. After meetings, there could be heard peals of laughter well into the night at the Shunda Creek Hostel.

Brian was a wonderful brother and uncle. He was our rock. He was so helpful, dependable, and caring. He never missed an important family event. His colleagues said the same. They all used words like dedicated, respected, kind, gentle, and humble. But when work was over he was known as a fun loving friend with a wicked sense of humour. He will be greatly missed by all.

A Funeral Service will be held at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 Street NW, Edmonton on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Reverend Vincent Lehr presiding; Visitation at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Rosehill Cemetery, 13951 Ellerslie Road SW, Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Brian’s colleagues, EMS paramedics, and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Emergency for their efforts to save Brian’s life.

In Loving Memory of
Brian Kelly
