Obituary

The family of James and Elizabeth Metcalfe regret to advise friends of their passing on January 30 and February 2, 2014, respectively. Jim and Betty were married in 1945 and celebrated their 68th anniversary on December 28, 2013. Much loved parents of J.B. (Patty), Robert (Nathalie), Don (Marion) and Lynne (David), 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous relatives and friends.

J.O. was the Chief of Urology at the University of Alberta Hospital between 1958 and 1975. As well as training over 50 Urologists in the J.O. program, he was a leader in Canadian and North American Urology.

He will be remembered as a wonderful father, husband, grandfather and teacher. Dr. J.O. had a charismatic and powerful personality that contributed to his success as an organizer and teacher. He was loved and respected by all who had the opportunity to work and play with him.

Betty was a physiotherapist who worked with many who were injured during World War II and affected by the polio epidemic, before turning her unstinting love and support to her family. Betty grew up in Ontario and was won over to the West by Jim and the mountains during an army furlough when she met Jim on the train. They were never happier than when together in those same mountains with their family.

A Private Family Service was held this past weekend and a Public Service will be held for friends in the spring, date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the J.O. Metcalfe Urology Lectureship, University of Alberta, Room 2J2 WMC, 8440-112 Street, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2R7.

In Loving Memory of
James and Elizabeth Metcalfe
