Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of Father Duncan MacDonnell announces his peaceful passing on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the age of 88.

Father Duncan was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on December 9, 1924. He is survived by his sister Theresa MacDonnell, his sister-in-law Claire MacDonnell and foster brother Joseph Procter, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand- nephews.

As a young man Father Duncan spent time in the army both in Canada and in Europe during World War II. He came to Edmonton in 1950 and entered St. Joseph's Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1955 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, after which he was assigned to various parishes around Alberta. In 1966 he opened a mission in Peru and spent six years working in the area outside of Lima. Upon his return to Canada in 1972, he again took up his work at various parishes in Alberta. He retired at the age of 80, his last parish being Our Lady of Angels in Fort Saskatchewan.

Father John Hesse, a classmate, will preside at Vigil Prayers at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013, at St. Joseph's Basilica, 10044 - 113 St. NW, Edmonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Basilica, Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with the Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton D.D, presiding. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail NW, Edmonton.

Donations in Father MacDonnell's memory may be made to the St. Joseph's Priest's Retirement Fund, 8421 - 101 Avenue, Edmonton, T6A 0L1.
