Dr. Roger G. Motut



On February 6, 2013, Roger George Motut passed away peacefully at the age of 95 years. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his children, Robert, Yolande, Mariette (Desmond), Pierre (Denise), Marc (Donna) and Renée; grandchildren, Ian (Carmen), Natalie (Trevor), Christina (Chad), Jennifer (Andrew), Michael (Stephanie), Lauren, Elliot and Eric (Jenna); great grandchildren, Shailene, Ethan, Dylan, Madeleine, Hannah, Harper, Callum and Evelyn. He is also survived by his sister, Lilianne Motut; brother -in-law, Leo Boisvert and sister-in- law, Yolande (Marcel) Blackburn. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Roger was predeceased by his much-beloved spouse of 67 years, Jeanne (née Boisvert) in 2012; brother, Roland and sister, Gilberte.

Roger was born in Hoey, Saskatchewan on July 21, 1917. He was educated at the Jesuit College in Edmonton and attended Normal School in Ottawa before serving in the RCAF during the Second World War. After the war, he had a successful career as a teacher, scholar and administrator. He taught school in Alberta and B.C., while pursuing advanced studies, and joined the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Alberta where he taught until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1982. He also served as Assistant Dean of Arts and Chairman of Romance Languages. He served two terms as President of L’ACFA (French-Canadian Association of Alberta), during which he was instrumental, among other initiatives, in bringing French language television to the province. He has received numerous accolades and awards for his work in the area of French language education and culture, notably the Order of Canada in 1979 and recently the Diamond Jubilee Medal. "Le Prix Roger Motut" was created by the Francophone community of Alberta to recognize literary and historical works written in French by Albertans. During his career and retirement years, Roger enjoyed translating and editing memoirs and journals, always passionately interested in the role played by francophones in the development of the Canadian West.

A Funeral Mass presided by Père Christophe Sobanski, SDS will be held at St-Thomas d'Aquin Catholic Church, 8410 – 89th Street on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, N.W. Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salem Manor Society, 4419 – 46 Street, Leduc, AB, T9E 6L2.
