Obituary

It is with deep sadness that the family of Donald Stewart Macquisten announce his passing on February 5, 2013, at the age of 85. Don was also affectionately known as Grandpa Mac, Uncle Don, Dad, and Nimrod. He passed away suddenly and peacefully in his home holding the hand of his beloved wife and guardian angel of 34 years, Bonnie. Don had the biggest heart in the world, and we thought it would carry him forever. Don was born in Montreal, Quebec, on June 26, 1927. He was predeceased by his father Stewart Andrew Macquisten in 1976 and his mother Barbara Jack Macquisten (McLellan) in 1986. He was a member of the Class of í45 at West Hill High School in Montreal where he was a football and hockey star. After high school Don played end and quarterback for the powerhouse Notre Dame de Grace of the Quebec Junior Football league, Soon after high school Don went to work for Crane Limited in Montreal and had an amazing 46 year career with that company. He was transferred to Edmonton in 1950 and there met his wife to-be Dorothy (Ranche) and mother of his children, Kenneth, Carol and Robert. After appointments in Vancouver and Calgary, Don returned to Edmonton in 1964 as the Manager of the Edmonton Branch where he retired in 1991. As a contributor to many aspects of community service, Don will be remembered for his straight forward jovial style for getting things done. In 1973 he served as President of his favorite hang-out, the Edmonton Country Club. His years of service there culminated in Don being awarded an Honorary Life Membership which he was very grateful for and proud of. He was President of the Edmonton Downtown Rotary Club in 1985-86 and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in appreciation of his many years of service. Don also served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating during his working career. Don will be most fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his ability to make friends with everyone he met. Don loved sports, and was an enthusiastic Oiler season ticket holder through the thin and the glory years. Golfing with his buddies was one of Donís greatest joys. He valued a firm handshake, and taught it to all his grandchildren. His trip of a lifetime was to Scotland Ė to view the Macquisten Bridge, see where his mother lived, stand on the Swilcan Bridge in St Andrews Links golf course, and to visit a few pubs. Don will be forever fondly remembered by his loving wife Bonnie; children Kenneth (Karen), Carol (Greg), Robert (Lisa); grandchildren Michael, Robert, Scott, Steven, Kelly, Kyle, Ella and Ali; his brother Gordon (Margaret) and nieces Lynn (Steve) and Kathie (Jodi). A celebration of Donís life will be held at the Edmonton Country Club, 6201 Country Club Road, on Monday February 11, 2013, between the hours of 1-4 pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made to a charity of your choice.

In Loving Memory of
Donald Stewart Macquisten
