Monsignor Felix Edward Otterson

“I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John X-10)

On Sunday, September 9, 2012, Monsignor Felix Otterson, brother, uncle, priest, pastor, teacher and friend, died peacefully at home with family and friends with him.

Fee was born in Edmonton on June 25, 1923. After studying at St. Joseph’s Seminary, he was ordained a priest for the Edmonton Diocese on February 8, 1948. Fee completed a B.A., Dip(Ed.) and B.Ed. from the University of Alberta, and an M.A. in Latin Classics from Fordham University in New York, NY. He also studied at the University of Notre Dame and received an Alumni Honour Award from the U of A in 2011.

His love of children led him to spend 34 years teaching and guiding students at St. Joseph, St. Mary and Austin O’Brien High Schools. Father Fee was honoured to preside over the mass and commencement ceremonies at Austin O’Brien High School for over 30 years. His legacy and contribution to education and the Edmonton Catholic community were recognized by the dedication of the Monsignor Fee Otterson Catholic Elementary/Junior High School in 2010. The school’s otter mascot is an example of Fee’s playful and mischievous nature.

After retiring from teaching, Father Fee served as Associate Pastor at St. Michael Resurrection, Associate Pastor then Pastor at St. John the Evangelist Church, and Chaplin to the Sisters of Providence in Edmonton. He loved theatre and travel, often combining the two to attend performances in Stratford, New York and London. Fee had a large extended family of friends, colleagues and former students, who all played an important role in his rich and well-lived life.

Fee was predeceased by his parents, Edward Patrick and Margaret Ann (Stevens); his sister, Consuella, and brother-in-law, Joseph Bohan.

Fee is survived by his sisters, Gertrude Bohan of Edmonton and Anne Otterson of Toronto; brother-in-law, Walter Ross; nieces and nephews, Michael (Kathie) Ross, Linda-Mae Ross, Colleen Ross, Mary-Anne (John) Derrick, Patrick (Sherry) Ross, Margot (Mick) Ross-Graham, D’Arcy (Patti-Lynn) Ross, Paddy (Megan) Bohan, Michael Bohan, Maureen (Tim) Toth, Sean Bohan, Kevin (Tanys) Bohan, Tiernan (Helen) Bohan, Seamus (Shelley) Bohan, and many loving great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

A Prayer Service in memory of Father Fee will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Basilica, 10044 – 113 Street, Edmonton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location, with Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton, presiding. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sy-Hua Chiu, Alberta Health Services – Community Care and Palliative Care Services, the priests of Villa Vianney, and the Sisters of Providence for their care, compassion and prayers.

God bless and thank you, Fee.

In Loving Memory of
Monsignor Felix Edward Otterson
