Obituary

Following a brief respiratory infection, James Miller of Edmonton, Alberta passed away peacefully at the age of 88 years to be reunited with his loving wife and enter the joy of eternal life. Always faithful to his merciful and loving God, Jim was a family-dedicated man with an engaging and jovial disposition, quick to share a funny story or an amusing observation. He was able to brighten people’s lives with his wit and humor, a true asset to a career servicing people and businesses. Affectionately nick-named “Big Jim”, he brought smiles to many faces. Jim was born the second of nine children to Chester and Delia Miller in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He attended St. Joseph’s High School and proudly followed brothers Lloyd and Bob into the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942. After months of British Columbia coastal patrol Jim was then stationed in Scotland as a combination wireless operator and air gunner commissioned as a Warrant Officer aboard Sunderland flying boats whose mission was to search and destroy German submarines. Twelve days after the end of WW II when heading out in low cloud cover to look for rogue enemy submarines Jim’s aircraft bounced off a grassy mountain as it crossed Ireland, tearing off the belly of the fully loaded aircraft. As he stated, “We cheated death three times” including a crash landing on the Isle of Man. All the crew got out safely before the plane exploded into unrecognizable pieces. After three months in the hospital he was discharged. Jim returned to Grande Prairie, worked as a bookkeeper for Crumme’s Garage, and fell in love with Eula Matlock, whom he wedded on June 19, 1946. He was a salesman for Kraft Foods for a year working out of Grande Prairie until they had their first child. Cadbury’s Chocolates then offered him a regional sales job which took him to Edmonton and the rest is history. Jim worked for Cadbury’s for 35 years, retiring in 1987. Interestingly, he always put God and family first and turned down many promotions which would have taken him to Montreal and other distant locations. Jim and Eula raised four sons and a daughter. Always active in his church and civic communities, Jim donated his time to the Knights of Columbus as a bingo MC and then as an official in the K of C Minor Hockey League. He physically helped build Immaculate Heart Parish Church where he and Eula were active members until it closed in 2001. He was a member of the Legion and the Air Gunners Association, where he shared endless “war stories”. He loved to watch his kids play sports, hunt ducks and geese in the fall especially around Grande Prairie where he grew up, play poker with his pals twice a month, and host back-yard BBQ’s attended by his extended family with many “adopted” members. For 13 years, Jim took his lovely bride to Mesa, Arizona for the winter months where they had an active social life and traveled the southwest USA. Besides cruises to Alaska and through the Caribbean, their trips over the years took them to Germany, Hawaii, Andorra, Spain and many automobile journeys to Northern Canada. After Eula passed away in 1998, he stayed closer to home. Jim is survived by his children, Dr. Stephen (Betty), Rev. Mark, Murray (Maggie), Maureen (Ron), and Greg (Renita); eight grandchildren, Darrin, Cameron, Ryan, Todd, Taylor, Trevor, Ian, and Tanya: two great grandchildren., Seth and Justin; brother Bob (Gloria); sisters, Joan and Margaret. He was predeceased by his wife, Eula; parents, Chester and Delia; bothers Lloyd, Dale and Don; and sisters, Shirley and Eileen. Prayers will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 10826 – 62 Avenue, Edmonton on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 7:00 PM. Reverend Mark Miller, CSsR will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11:00 AM also at St. Agnes Church. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society (www.alzeimer.ab.ca) or the Mustard Seed (www.theseed.ca), or Sacred Heart Parish for distribution to inner city needy.

In Loving Memory of
James Edward Miller
