Our family helping your family since 1908 - Generations of Excellence

Marilyn MacKinnon

Marilyn died peacefully in Edmonton on April 29 in the presence of family. She will be greatly missed by her three children, Kevin, Brian and Margo; cherished daughters-in- law Leslie (Stephenson) and Marilena Carminati and son-in-law Gavin MacDougall; treasured grandchildren Colin, Erin, Matteo, Chiara and Elena; beloved brothers Tom Casey (Patricia) and Frank Casey (Dolores); and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon (1979) and her parents Margaret (Friedt) and Andrew Casey. Born on June 06, 1924, in Seattle, Washington and raised in Edmonton during the Depression in Sacred Heart Parish, Marilyn attended Normal School during the Second World War and taught in many locations in Northern Alberta and the Edmonton area. She married Gordon in 1952 after completing her university degree in Education. In 1949 she began a fulfilling career with the Edmonton Catholic School District where she was a teacher and counsellor until her retirement in 1984. During her retirement, Marilyn relished travel, opera, concerts, theatre, marvelling at her grandchildren, and laughing with family and lifelong friends. Marilyn was also an active volunteer: she was an accomplished parish lector, a member of her parish council, involved with the CWL, and committed to her work with the Edmonton Food Bank. She refined her speaking skills with Toastmasters and competed internationally. Marilyn continued her volunteer work until the effects of cancer in 1989 irreparably weakened her body but not her spirit. Marilyn lived her life with faith, integrity, humility, compassion and love. The family wishes to thank the staff at Shepherd's Gardens Mill Woods Supportive Living and Unit 53 of the Grey Nuns' Hospital for their kindness and care.
