Obituary

The family of Louis Charles Day wish to announce that he passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday, March 28, 2012.

Louis is survived by his wife of 30 years, Margaret (Peggy) Day; his sons, Wayne (Rene), Michael (Shelley); daughter-in-law, Delores; grandchildren, Mark, Nicole, Jason, Stephen, Brant, and Brynn; and great-grandchildren, Heru, Olivia, and Gisella.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Ada Day in 1980.

Louis was born in Edmonton and with the exception of two years served with the Canadian Navy (1944-1946) in Prince Rupert, BC lived his entire life in the city.

Louis joined the Edmonton Fire Department in 1942 rising through the ranks to become Deputy Chief in 1963 and Chief in 1972 until his retirement in 1984.

Before being promoted to the management ranks he was active in the Edmonton Fire Fighters Union, the Edmonton Civic Employees Federation, and the Alberta Federation of Labour.

His accomplishments in the Fire Service include a leadership role in the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Canadian Association of Fire chiefs, being a founding member of the Alberta Provincial Building Standards Council, being instrumental in establishing a paramedic staffed ambulance service, spearheading the introduction of CPR training initially to the Fire Service and eventually to the community at large, encouraging innovation in the field of fire prevention, and introducing fire safety education programs for school children – Grades one to five.

On the community front, Louis was a founding member of the United Fund of Edmonton, serving a variety of roles in that organization for a number of years.

In recognition of his accomplishments he received the Order of Canada in 1982, the Alberta Achievement Award in Fire Safety in 1982; the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, was featured in 100 Years of Excellence in Public Administration and has recently received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award.

Peggy and the rest of the family wish to express their gratitude to the members of the team on Unit 52 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their care, compassion, and love. Thanks also to those from Palliative Care and Pastoral Services for their kindness and support.
