Dear Cavanaugh Family: Terry whether as Alderman/Mayor/Councillor assisted my father Joe Koopmans & our family very ably when we had bureaucratic nightmares to deal with City administration. He backed our play to keep 100A Avenue open at 156th Street instead of letting the Jasper Place Bus Terminal be expanded over it. This would have killed a lot of our walk in traffic from the east, south, downtown, & north corridors of Edmonton & surrounding area for our family business, Koopmans' Furniture. Already difficult as we had to do a little bit of extra advertising as we were on a residential street one block of Stony Plain Road & not on it itself. Terry also assisted us in voting to try & get dad on the Edmonton Police Commission as a civilian at large member, & with committee & full council matters. While dad wasn't successful, he appreciated Terry's advocacy for him, especially as he was never our Ward council member. Both through the administrations of other Mayors & through his 2 non consecutive & very able interim stewardships as Mayor upon the death of Mayor Hawrelak & the resignation of Mayor Decore. Truly a man of integrity, grace, & confidence. Terry Cavanaugh defined for our family what it was to be a nice & classy gentleman. Always professional & businesslike, Terry doing things like opening up the Windmill at The Dutch Canadian Centre, located in the Peter Lougheed Multicultural Village, speaking during a crisis, or settling a budget matter had a certain style about him. He made sure that all sides felt like they got something out of every argument, that they all felt like they won, but that that they all contributed to the Cavanaugh compromise(s) he set in place. You just don't see that kind of quality person & politician nowadays. A true political legend was Terry & his late was June was also a sweetheart, she got along with my late mom also named June. Terry once said when the ladies were around the old song: "June is busting out all over!" Of course meaning the spring & summer season, but he made the 2 Junes feel he was praising them. Truly a master craftsman of words & fairness, as well as honesty & accountability in politics! Graciously & In Sympathy: 91 What A Glorious Run, Rory & Joe Koopmans

Val so sorry to read about your fathers death. I would like to send my deepest condolences to you and your family. While I was President of The Foresters I had Terry at many events and he was always happy to attend them. He even remembered me from yours and my high school days at Austin O'Brien. I know it is never easy to loose a parent especially at Christmas but remember to keep a him as a part of your celebration and always keep his memory alive. Jerry Wilk
